Adjacent to the cities of Burnaby, Surrey, New Westminster, Port Moody and Port Coquitlam, the city of Coquitlam, British Columbia is one of 21 cities that comprise Metro Vancouver. Primarily suburban living, Coquitlam is situated 10 to 15 km east of Vancouver, where the Coquitlam River connects with the Fraser River and extends northeast along the Pitt River toward the Coquitlam and Pitt lakes. Southwest Coquitlam encompasses what was the original site of the city, including Maillardville and the Fraser River industrial sector as well as the residential areas of Austin Heights. These older homes on large properties are undergoing urban renewal, being redeveloped into newer and larger residences. Construction of the Lougheed Highway and rapid transit sparked major urban development on Westwood Plateau and now on Burke Mountain. Como Lake offers fishing and other recreational activities, while the Coquitlam Crunch hiking trail provides a rigorous workout, and golfers enjoy the courses of Eaglequest and the Westwood Plateau Golf & Country Club. Coquitlam is also home to a community of artists and music lovers, who contribute to a thriving summer concert scene and arts festivals.
