Nestled in the southwest corner of the province of British Columbia, Vancouver is a highly diverse world-class multi-cultural port city with 52% of residents speaking first languages other than English. Its popularity worldwide is based on a myriad of attractions, like stunning ocean and mountain views, a mild climate, welcoming and friendly citizens, plentiful recreational opportunities, a busy downtown business centre and world-renowned academic institutions. A patchwork of distinct neighbourhoods, each with its own characteristic flair and heritage, Vancouver is surrounded by water on three sides, with a network of bridges, freeways and rapid transit lines that connect the city to its suburbs and neighbouring municipalities. To expand capacity, the new Vancouver City Plan and Broadway Subway and Redevelopment Plans advocate densifying, with single family homes being replaced by multi-family dwellings and high-rises. Frequently, Vancouver hosts major international events, such as Expo ’86 and the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics.
